How to Adopt

Florida Poodle Rescue Adoption Process

Our goal is to find the right forever home for each dog in our care. We strive to make wise and permanent placements for each Poodle.  We are advocates for our dogs.  We adopt to homes where we believe our dogs will thrive and blossom.  Remember, the more conditions that you set (e.g. color, coat type, age, and sex), the longer it will take for you to be matched with a dog. Please be open-minded to the different qualities that each Poodle has to offer. Try to avoid “falling in love” with a particular Poodle — another applicant may have already been chosen as the best fit for a dog that you see online. We place Poodles where we think he or she will be a successful addition, and not on a first-come-first-served basis.

Requirements

  • You must be at least 21 years of age and living on your own.
  • All current pets in your home MUST be spayed/neutered. The only exception is if they are currently being shown in the conformation ring or health issues preclude this surgery. Verification will be required.
  • All current pets in your home MUST be up to date on vaccinations and be maintained on monthly heartworm preventative. We will call your vet to verify this information.
  • We do not adopt out dogs as gifts or surprises! Absolutely no exceptions.
  • If you rent, you must provide your landlord’s name, address and phone number. We will verify with your landlord that you are allowed to have a dog.
  • Applicants are willing to spend $45 (Toys & Minis) to $100 (Standards ) every 5-8 weeks for grooming.
  • Applicants are willing to make a lifelong commitment to love and care for their adopted dog.
  • All applicants are willing to have a volunteer check their references, and do a home visit.

Not everyone who applies is able to adopt from Florida Poodle Rescue, Inc. Our mission is to find homes best suited for our Poodles. The time frame for each adoption will vary and can range from one month to up to one year or longer to find a suitable match. We appreciate your patience.

Adoption Fees

A fee ranging from $150-$800 is required at the time of adoption. The amount will be determined by Florida Poodle Rescue and is used to cover, among other things, the expenses of spaying/neutering, vaccination, heartworm testing, microchipping (if needed), grooming and ongoing care for each of our dogs. Florida Poodle Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all money goes toward caring for the Poodles that we rescue. Even though the adoption fees help offset our medical bills, they often do not cover the money needed to care for the dog while in the Florida Poodle Rescue program. We still depend on donations from the public, and your support is greatly appreciated.

The Application Acknowledgment

When you apply online, you will receive an email confirmation.

Reference Checks

Volunteers process the applications, and the speed of processing depends on two major factors: volunteer availability and how quickly your references respond to requests for information. When an application comes in, we check your vet and groomer first, then your personal references. Please supply email addresses for your personal references to ensure faster processing, and be sure to let your personal references know that we will be contacting them. Call your vet and groomer to give approval to release information about your pets. Once all of your references are checked, the application is forwarded to the placement team.

The Matching Process

A placement team volunteer will review your application information with you by phone. We generally have a waiting list of people wanting to adopt, but placements are not made on a first-come first-serve basis. As dogs come into the program we go through our applications and choose from applicants that we feel will be the best match for the dog.

The Home Visit

We require a home visit before a placement can be made. One of our volunteers will arrange to meet with you in your home environment. The information from the home visit will be used to determine if your application is approved, and to help match you with a dog suitable for your family, your home and your lifestyle. All family members and live-in help must be present.

Meet the Poodle

Following the home visit, when a potential match has been made, you will be asked to contact the dog’s foster parent, who has the most information about the personality, characteristics and needs of that dog. Arrangements will be made for you and your family to meet the dog, and the foster parent will determine whether this would be a good match. No adoption is guaranteed, and will depend on the interactions between you and the dog at this meeting.

The Adoption Contract and Adoption Fee

Upon adoption you will be required to read and sign a legally binding contract detailing the terms and conditions of the adoption. Click here to read the contract. You will also be required to pay the adoption fee at that time. Florida Poodle Rescue will never ask you for a deposit in order to process your adoption application.  No payment is required until you are matched with a dog, and you sign an adoption contract.

Our application must be completed in full to be considered for the adoption of a Poodle. While you may indicate an interest in a specific rescue dog on your application, there will likely be many interested applicants for any particular dog. We work very hard to ensure that each adoption is an ideal fit, and have successfully placed many great dogs with families who initially did not inquire about them because another dog’s picture caught their eye.

All fields with * must be answered. If you are applying to adopt a Standard Poodle, please note that that A FENCED-IN YARD WITH A 6′ PHYSICAL FENCE IS REQUIRED. A screened lanai is not a substitute for a fenced yard.

NO ELECTRONIC FENCES FOR DOGS OF ANY SIZE.  NO EXCEPTIONS.
